EA Threatens Game Bans for Forum Activity

Posted by ballightning on October 31, 2008

Owners of Electronic Arts published titles such as Spore and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 may end up banned from playing their games if they get banned from any EA-moderated forum, according to this post from moderator eaapoc:

Your forum account will be directly tied to your Master EA Account, so if we ban you on the forums, you would be banned from the game as well since the login process is the same. And you’d actually be banned from your other EA games as well since its all tied to your account. So if you have SPORE and Red Alert 3 and you get yourself banned on our forums or in-game, well, your SPORE account would be banned to. It’s all one in the same, so I strongly recommend people play nice and act mature.

Similar threats emerged earlier this year, when Spore forumites were threatened with bans for discussing the title’s controversial DRM, though EA later stepped in to clarify that the threat stemmed from an “over-zealous community volunteer” and were “absolutely not true or in-line with EA’s moderation policy.”

“What if some moderator goes off on a power trip?” asked Shacker Pugnate, who tipped Shacknews off to the news. “Does he seriously have the right to block access to software you legally purchased?”

Will Wright Interview

Posted by ballightning on October 30, 2008

YourSpore.de has a brand-new video interview they with Will Wright. It is conducted in English although the interviewer is sometimes a bit hard to follow. You still need to view it; a lot of questions about what was added or left out are asked and answered. Also their strategy in add-ons is explained. In short, they will try many different kinds of add-ons. Roughly grouped as content, gameplay and other types, which is hinted to be tool sets of sorts. Like I said, you need to watch it.

Badass EA

Posted by ballightning on October 28, 2008

One week ago SoupLLJK was banned for seven days for commenting “badass” on someone elses creature.

<violation type : Offending comment>
<profile text :Offending Comment: badass >
<Creation Date: 14/10/2008 04:03>
Understanding the EA Terms of Service is extremely important, should you have any general questions or concerns please review the Terms of Service here: EA ONLINE PRIVACY POLICY and TERMS OF SERVICE. Should you then need additional assistance, or wish to appeal a violation, you can contact us here: ANSWER. Sincerely,Customer Support Electronic Arts, Inc. EA.com Customer Relations

After recieving the ban he immediately sent an appeal to EA Customer Support.

EA Account Name: xxx@hotmail.com
Game: Spore

Appeal: My account has been banned for posting a comment telling them their creature looked “badass”. I didn’t realize this would violate the Terms of Service at the time, actually meant it as a compliment and I had no intention of being offensive. In the future, I will be more careful, it was a simple mistake. Would you unban my account for the reasons above?

A short while later he received the following reply:

Hi,

Thank you for contacting EA In-game support.

After further review of your account, we have determined [Offending Comment: badass ] is in violation of the EA Terms of Service.

“Strong vulgar language, crude or explicit sexual references … are always inappropriate Content for EA Online.” Please review section 2 “ONLINE CONTENT” for complete details.

As a result, your account has been suspended for a period of 7 days. Continued violations of the Terms of Service may result in additional suspensions and/or termination of your account.

Sincerely,

Vishal Khanna
Customer Support Representative.

So EA was going to be pushy, so he let it drop and didn’t play spore for seven days, then on the eighth day after he was banned from Spore’s server he tried to play again but it did not work. He still can’t log in. He got this message:

Hello, Your Electronic Arts account has been suspended for 30 days for violating the Electronic Arts Inc Terms of Service. We believe that the violation or behavior is serious enough to suspend your access to the service.

Violation: violation type : Language / RacialComment

Should you then need additional assistance, or wish to appeal a violation, you can contact us here: ANSWER. Sincerely,Customer Support Electronic Arts, Inc. EA.com Customer Relations

So he was banned for 30 days, instead of 7, all for commenting “badass”. It appears that he did not even break the Terms of Servive which state:

“Strong vulgar language, crude or explicit sexual references … are always inappropriate Content for EA Online.”

Badass does not come under any of those, as shown by the dictionary which gives it a meaning which is nothing to do with vulgar or crude language:

adjective Also, badassed. 1. (of a person) difficult to deal with; mean-tempered; touchy.
2. distinctively tough or powerful; so exceptional as to be intimidating.
–noun 3. a mean-tempered troublemaker.

So once again EA has acted when it shouldn’t’ve. Not only that, but the ban extension to 30 days is not correct, as a 1st offense is a 7 day ban. And he has not had any ban before this event.

If you find this a disgrace please send it on by posting on blogs, forums and sending by email.

Amazon continues to censor bad ratings

Posted by ballightning on October 23, 2008

It has been revealed by The Register that Amazon has once again removed ratings from a game which were predominately a rating of 1, this time the “technical glitch” has happened to the Crysis expansion, Crysis: Warhead. Crysis had over 100 out of the 150 reviews being one star rating, here it is from google cache:

Then heres what it looked like after Amazon deleted the reviews:

Questionable, yes? Note which rating category most reviews were deleted from.

The to our Amazon spokeswoman.

“It turns out that similar to the Spore incident, some customer reviews were accidentally removed from the Crysis detail page because of a technical glitch,” she responded. “Amazon did not knowingly or consciously choose to remove the reviews. The team is working on resolving this issue now and restoring all the reviews on the site.”

That still seemed suspect. Upon further pressing, she elaborated a bit.

“I can’t get into the specifics, but there are some safeguards to try and ensure that customer reviews fall within Amazon’s customer review guidelines. Sometimes those safeguards pick up on content that seems questionable and removes it.”

Amazon’s guidelinesdoesn’t seem to have anything barring DRM criticism, other than requesting reviews focus on specific features of the product.

Spore has slumped below 40th in the UK All-Formats Chart, which combine all says on all platforms for every game. One reason for not achieving results which it did in other all formats charts is that this one combines all console versions of a game into one title, which puts PC only games at a disadvantage, as they must compete with titles on 3-5 platforms. Spore did have the help of having a DS version, but compared to games like Wall-E and FIFA 09 which both have six platforms it is a hard sell for games like Spore.

Not surprisingly the only platforms which managed to get a stand alone title for that platform was the wii and the DS, with the exception of Halo 3, which is not as high as many would have wanted it to be.

  1. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3)
  2. FIFA 09 (PC, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS)
