Spore Modding Tool Released

Posted by ballightning on November 29, 2008

Spore modding has started of very slowly compared to other games, however the premium spore site Sporemods has been at the forefront of spore modding. With their great list of spore mods (which we have borrowed for this site), they have been providing many great fixes to spore.

Void at Sporemods has released a modding program for spore, in collaboration with others, called SporeMaster. Even though it is only a beta release it is the most promising spore modding tool to date, with many unique features, however it may still have some bugs in the program so watch out and report them in this thread so we can have a better modding tool!

Key Features:

  • Streamlined unpacking and packing of .package files, with automatic conversion of .prop files to and from .xml. files.xml is no longer necessary.
  • XML files are more user-friendly than in previous mod tools, using names instead of hashes where possible.
  • Full text indexing of .xml and .locale files in the unpacked package, to permit very fast incremental search.
  • Side-by-side comparison of file tree in Spore and the mod under development. One-click execution of WinMerge to see and edit changes in an individual file.
  • Built in syntax highlighting editor.
  • Tools for guessing the original names for hashes and for creating friendly aliases for hashes that can’t be guessed (or that were randomly generated by EA).
  • Expanded list of group and instance hashes

New York Times – Interesting facts about Will Wright

Posted by ballightning on November 22, 2008

Will Wright would probably have one of the most interesting biographies, considering he is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, game developers ever. We don’t have a biography yet, but here are some real neat facts about Will Wright from the New York Times.

Favorite game he didn’t design: It’s a call between Civilization and Grand Theft Auto. One makes you think of history in a different way. The other is a playground where you can wreak havoc and don’t have to clean up afterward.

Hobby: Well, I did BattleBots for many years. It’s a competition in which remote-controlled robots fight one another. I’ve built more than 10 of those robots.

Fitness routine: I broke my arm last year. Occasionally, I’ll do weights to get my arms back in balance. I have one 20-pound weight.

Worst thing about job: It’s so easy to come up with a cool idea, and it takes so long to manifest it well. I worked on Spore for about seven years. The first two years were me doing research.

His private Spore game: I’ve been trying to beat Spore on the hardest setting. I’ve gotten deep into it, to the spaceship phase, to the center of the universe. I am now building a long, slow campaign to colonize different galaxies.

Hi everybody. There are people who aren’t sure if they want to buy this product, so in a fit of OCD, I have compiled the following images, which show all that the Creepy & Cute Parts Pack has to offer. I am only doing this to satisfy people’s curiosity, not as any endorsement of the product itself.

First of all… here are the mouth parts. There are four of each (carnivore, omnivore, and herbivore). I have included both a front and side view of each.

PCGA President: Spore DRM Revolt Was Gamers’ Boston Tea Party

Posted by ballightning on November 13, 2008

The president of the newly formed PG Gaming Alliance, Randy Stude, has spoken about DRM in PC gaming and has come to some conclusions on piracy in gaming.

“I don’t think it’s getting worse, as much as it’s getting easier,” said the consortium head to Ars Technica. He offered file-sharing trail-blazer Napster as an example to show that pirates strike all forms of media and are not unique to the games industry.

What was most surprising is that he leads a consortium which is backed by many of the main PC gaming companies but has come out on the side of the enraged gamers which complained about Spore’s Draconian DRM. “I think gamers wanted to make their voices known; it was the equivalent of the Boston tea party,” he remarked.

Stude showed his understanding that PC gamers are a unique and diverse bunch, and as such don’t do well with limitations. “PC gamers don’t buy one machine, stick it in the corner, hook it up to the TV, and play it forever. We play on multitudes of machines, and we want the same rights an Xbox 360 purchaser has, to move the game to whatever machine we want to play on.”

Stude was still pushed onto the piracy issue by the publishers he represents. For their sake, he promises a solution. “The PCGA would like to address the methodology that publishers might be able to take to solve … the piracy challenge for their substantial investments in content.” He reiterated his organization’s promise to accurately measure piracy in the wake of wildly varying statistics on the issue.

Another Class Action against Spore for DRM

Posted by ballightning on November 10, 2008

Richard Eldridge has accused Spore’s Creators, Electronic Arts, with installing software unbeknown to the customer. This case is against the Spore Creature Creator Trail which installed SecuROM  which can not be uninstalled fully from your computer. From the suit:

The inclusion of undisclosed, secretly installed DRM protection measures with a program that was freely distributed constitutes a major violation of computer owners’ absolute right to control what does and what does not get loaded onto their computers, and how their computers shall be used…

[SecuROM] cannot be completely uninstalled. Once installed it becomes a permanent part of the consumer’s software portfolio…

EA’s EULA for Spore Creature Creator Free Trial Edition makes utterly no mention of any Technical Protection Measures, DRM technology, or SecuROM whatsoever…

There is also a similar case against EA for The Sims 2: Bon Voyage.
