Spore Mods update on Galactic Adventures + patch 1.04

Hello fellow spore lovers. Sadly I have moved on from this game. However you can still follow my work over at youtube! I currently am focused on Minecraft, and in particular, Minecraft Cinematics.

Whenever there is a new patch for spore, it always throws the modding community of its perch as we have to change all our mods. And yesterday with the release of the latest patch 1.04, in addition to the release of the spore expansion, Galactic Adventures, it seems that our current mods are doomed.

But good investigative work from the members over at sporemods.org have found that once you install Galactic Adventures, all you need to do to make the mods work is to move them to the folder as directed below.

C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\SPORE_EP1\Data

There is no known fix currently for people who have installed the patch but do not get the expansion.

As we learn more, we’ll post it up, also remember to visit the How to Install Spore Mods page for more.

Sporemods 2.0 Released

It has only been just over half a year since Spore Modding took off with a bang when Lazer released sporemods.org to create a community dedicated to Spore Modding. And since then spore modding has taken off. In December, BetterSpore 1.0 was released which later began the most downloaded spore mod ever.


Sporemods is now moving into the future with the release of their new site design and forum structure. Head over to sporemods to check out the new website.

What is Nineballfool’s Uber Epic Mod?

This mod allows you to play the creature game as a true “uber” epic. You can now effectively be an epic. Have fun!

This mod was made for combat purposes, you can socialize if you want, but it is not tested.



1.) Your creature will start with 1,000 healthpoints and could go as high as 5,000 healthpoints (formula=base healthpoints multiplied by 100)

2.) Your creature’s damage is pretty much “one hit kill” (except against other epics and rogues)

3.) your creature will have the epic stomp, strike and spit attack animations and sounds (to get the stomp/strike animation…click the strike icon…it is random….your creature will either strike the opponent or stomp him with his foot…spit animation by clicking the spit icon)

4.) your creature will have all the sounds of an epic……foot steps….screaming

5.) the screen will shake as you walk…just like when the epics are nearby

6.) no hunger drain

7.) lowered the amount of nest members to 1….a few show up sometimes….but they disappear…if you cannot find one….click the mate icon and one will appear

8.) increased the viewing distance…so you can see things farther away (this may depend on the quality of your video card)

FileFront – What is happening?

Last week, FileFront (the hoster of many mods, including some for spore) anncouned that it would be shutting its doors on March the 31st, the day before April Fools Day. Yet the site is still running now, after a period of being shut down. However it seems that none of the files are on their site still (Example). The forums have also come back on line, with the admin posting an announcement that he has no idea what is going on. Here is an interesting read from some of the users on the FileFront forum.

Sporedum reaches 200,000 hits

About 2 hours ago we reached 200,000 hits, a great achievement for a blog which has only been around for 5 months. We would like to thank all you people, our readers, for coming to Sporedum and supporting us, and we would like to say that we will continue to try and bring daily news on all things spore. Whether it be new expansions, mods or just general news about spore we will be here to bring it to you as it happens.

We can now proudly and truly say that we are the largest blog dedicated to spore, and only run slightly short of our friends SimPrograms the largest sims blog. I never really know how many of you read the front page to check out the news or just see whats going on (as i can only see stats for how many people see pages/posts), however when i posted Preview: New Parts, over 400 people from the front page went over to youtube to watch a video of the new parts coming in BetterSpore. I never realized just how many people looked on the front page and once again i would like to thank you for inspiring me to continue.


I hope to see you around in the near future and look out for our special trailer for BetterSpore coming soon.

Sporenament Alpha

JoeyBagOfDonuts has created a new spore application which pits your creations against each other to find the best creatures. He is also looking into creating a leader-board of all the best creations. Here is what he had to say on the official spore forums. We will bring you more as it comes.


A way for you to “find” new content by pitting one person’s creation against another in a tournament. There are 3 Spornaments (Level 1, 2 and 3). 

At level 1 you compare 16 random creations (although you have the ability to filter by Buildings, Creatures, UFOs or Vehicles [or any combination]) until you reach one ultimate winner at the end. The winner will be saved so that it can compete in a Level 2 competition. [That part has not been started yet]. 

At Level 2, you compare 8 Level 1 winners until you reach one winner at the end. That will be saved for a Level 3 Sporenament. 

At Level 3, you compare 4 Level 2 winners. 

At each level, both the Author of the creation and the person who judged the Spornament will be awarded “Spoints” which will be used to determine what you are allowed to do. I plan on putting some sort of leaderboard by Spoints. 

Any of the assets can be right clicked and you will have the option to visit several of the Maxis webpages related to that asset. If you are logged in, you could do anything you would normally be able to do, such as add asset to a Sporecast or make comments on the creation. 

For now, the only part that is 90% complete is the Level 1 Sporenament. Once you start the app, click the blue level 1 button at the bottom. From there, filter your assets, then just click on which asset you like best in each of the groupings. If something isn’t implemented, a messagebox will explain what the plan is for the thing you clicked on. 

The app requires the .Net 2.0 runtime. It will prompt you to install it if you don’t have it but for some reason the link takes you to the 3.5 runtime (you have to choose 2.0 runtime from the right-hand menu).

Over the last few weeks me, Mettra and Virakotxa have been working on making new parts for spore. After getting them into the game, they were still black just the same way that Void’s Glasses were, however we have done a proof of concept texture. You can see the created creature in the video below.

Do you want to have a specific part? Post other in our Official Part Request thread or post in this topic.

We are always looking for new modelers to help out the workload. If you are good at 3D modeling and are interested in making new parts first read this tutorial, then if you are ok with it head over to the BetterSpore forum and post in the Better Spore Development team thread. Feedback is always welcomed.

Q. Will the creatures which contain these modded parts be able to upload to the Sporepedia?

A. It is theoretically possible, as Virakotxa has shown with her creature which contained Void’s glasses. However that was on auto-upload and so far testing has shown that we can not upload it and make it successful when clicking the share button. We will be trying to contact EA to see if we can make it so it will be like C&C and have it so that people who don’t have the mod will get a ‘?’ and will not be effected while people with the mod can play with it.

Q. Will new parts effect my saved games or my spore game?

A. This mod will be safe and secure, we will have many people Alpha test it. Also it uses the same format as patch 1.03.

MaxisCactus has official released their first spore mod. Due to an uproar over the problem of unreachable grox planets, EA last week promised to fix the problem. They have now released their first mod and have fixed the problem. This is a boon for us modders as this shows us how EA release their mods, and also this mod does exactly what we modders released over 2 months ago.

I hope you enjoy killing of those grox now.

This mod increases the travel radius when in the galactic core zone to 10 parsecs (a travel radius of 9.8 parsecs is needed to reach all the stars in the galactic core area). This mod will work with your current saved games.

To use it, save it to your Spore Data folder. You’ll need to have updated to patch three in order to run this mod. If you patch your Spore game after using this mod, this file will be automatically deleted. To get the mod after patching, simply download it again.

Better Spore 1.4 Released

The new version of BetterSpore has been released. This version has been the biggest change since BetterSpore came out with new items, changes to 4 stages and many bug fixes. You can download BetterSpore from out BetterSpore page and please comment it telling us what you think! Here is the full list of changes:

– The intro now skips the opening movie.


Creature Stage:

– Fixed Flying

– No more annoying sea monsters!



Tribal Stage:

– Reduced the tribal stage slightly (it is still harder then the original) to fix game crashing



Space Stage:

– Now find items like healing tools as random items on planets.

– It now takes longer to get the high end badges.

Create your own spore parts!

This month saw the release of SporeMaster v2, which includes the incredible ability to create your own parts! Void spent much of his time trying to get it to work and what a great job he has done. Here is the first ever non-Maxis made part. Even though it is just glasses, this is one huge stepping stone for modding. But what if you want to create your own parts, well Void has create 2 great tutorials, one on how to make a part and one on how to make a new texture. To make a new part, blender, python 2.5.2 and sporemaster are needed.

With the rapid increase in modding activity in the last two weeks there has been many people asking for tutorials on how to mod spore using SporeMaster. Here is a list of helpfull tutorials for spore modding:

Hacked Creation sparks modding debate

DFStormbringer started a raging debate on the official spore forums when he proved that a featured creation had hacked the game. The creation, a colosseum, was 3 times over the level of complexity Maxis had as a limit. This debate expanded into one about mods in spore. Maxis did come into the debate and un-featured the colosseum, stating “Our team is looking into better ways to detect if a creation has been illegally altered so that we can avoid featuring it. In the mean time, letting us know on the forums is the best way to rectify the situation. The feature has been removed from the Colloseum creation.” It seems Maxis has taken the line that only featured creations will require the complexity limit. While the debate still rages, the real question is Maxis willing to let people mod spore.

SporeMaster 2 Released

The latest spore modding tool, SporeMaster v2,  has arrived with many new features. The largest change is the ability to pack .rw4 model and texture files with packages. This allow the ability to create totally new parts. However Void is still working on animation, which SporeMaster v2 does not support. Along side this, SporeMaster also allows you to view the images and models in the program. This is especially handy for the creation of new items. Void has also created 2 fantastic guides on how to create a part and how to make a texture.

SporeMaster v2 is here!

SporeMaster version 2 is here with many new possibilities, the most prominent is the one of creating totally new parts. Thanks very much to Void at SporeMods to create this amazing modding tool!




Key Features:

  • Unpacking and packing of .package files, with automatic conversion of .prop files to and from .xml. files.xml is no longer necessary.
  • NEW: Packing of .rw4 (RenderWare 4) model and texture files (from OGRE3D XML format and DDS format respectively) with packages, making part creation possible for the first time. Unpacking of these files is currently very limited. Part animations are not yet supported.
  • XML property files are more user-friendly than in previous mod tools, using names instead of hashes where possible. NEWXML files are order-independent.
  • Full text indexing of .xml and .locale files in the unpacked package, to permit very fast incremental search. NEW: Search for keywords separated by spaces or “literal phrases”.
  • Side-by-side comparison of file tree in Spore and the mod under development. One-click execution of WinMerge to see and edit changes in an individual file.
  • Built in syntax highlighting editor.
  • NEW: Image and model viewers.
  • Tools for guessing the original names for hashes and for creating friendly aliases for hashes that can’t be guessed (or that were randomly generated by EA). The “Hash Guesser” tries more than 250 billion possible names for a given hash, providing you with a list of possible original names to choose from. When a new name is found the unpacked files are automatically updated.

Release: Better Spore v1.0 (beta)

Better Spore

This mod aims to make spore a better game for a more enjoyable experience. Currently this mod is in beta and will need testing in many areas including bug testing and game balance issues. Please give it a try and give me some feedback. Once again thanks to Void for the creation of SporeMaster, and this mod will move along much more when SporeMaster v1.2 comes out. 

Features – v1.0

  • Difficulty tweaking to make more of a difference between the different levels, overall hard level is harder then before, while easy is easier.
  • Overhaul of spice in spore, making it cheaper and slower to get, also making it more expensive to get trade routes, basically it is now worth the time to do missions and get artifacts.
  • All mission now give you twice as much money
  • NEW FEATURE – Empires which don’t like you as much give you less money for missions, while close friends give you more!
  • Cost to give gifts to empires has doubled
  • More buildings on T1 and T2 planets
  • FEATURE – disasters less often, less attacks by pirates, and invasions by enemies. Buildings to counter these are more effective
  • Getting a collection of artifacts is now worth much more, with the possibility to get over 12 million sporebucks!
  • Pirate ship health increase.
