Creator Spotlight: Karl-EL

Posted by ballightning on May 10, 2009

Karl-EL is one of the best creators out there, with some stunning creations. We go in-depth with him about his use of the Spore Creators, and how you can create like him.

If you think you have a creator who deserves a spotlight, post a comment below or in our thread on the official forums.

ProfileKarl-EL

Sporedum: Your creations are really well thought out, and the design is stunning! Do you find any particular inspiration for your work?

Karl-EL: Like most of the people in the community, I draw inspiration from all over. Not surprisingly, I am a huge Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan and have been playing video games since the 80’s. One of my favorite early games was Master of Orion and I have attempted to pay homage to that game by recreating some of the races from the series.

Sporedum: So, other than old games, from where else do you draw your inspiration?

Karl-EL: I get a lot of my inspiration from life. One of the earliest memories I have is when I was very young I wanted to be an artist. My aunt told me the most important thing to being a goodartist was observing the world around me. I really took that to heart and ever since then I have tried to pay close attention to how everything is put together. I utilize my knowledge of anatomy to help make my creatures more realistic.

Observation goes beyond the physical world around us; one of my great loves is history and politics. I draw great inspiration from my knowledge of history and I use that in the development of the races I create. I like to mirror earth history in their background stories and represent different earth cultures with the different species. Most recently I worked on a species, the Jotun, for Moejoe18 and beta_psi’s Space Civ Contest that was formed around the theme of the Vikings. My favorite part of that set was their space ship the Sturmbringer. I really tried to incorporate a lot of longship elements into that design and I’m pretty happy with the end result.

Sporedum: You get a lot of great ratings for your creations, many appearing in the most popular list, as well as many comments. What do you think it is about your work that people are drawn to?

Karl-EL: I’m not really sure. One of the things I tell people is that they should take something they know and give it an alien twist. By including the familiar in with the alien the audience is able to relate it to it while at the same time feel like they are seeing something completely new.

Sporedum: Have you met anyone during your experience playing Spore?

Karl-EL: I have. I’ve met a lot of people actually. I’d say the most interaction occurs on the Sporum where I have had the opportunity to get to know and work with several other players. I am most active in the DLC Critics Corner thread on the Sporum and while there have been fortunate enough to work with deadlineclickMoejoe18JazzTap and most recently beta_psi has joined the team. The thread is primarily used as a place where people can come together and give and get honest critiques of their work. You have to have pretty thick skin on that thread, because we tend not to pull any punches when it comes to our critiques. Everyone on the thread is great and we’re all very honest with each other about what we like and what we don’t like about each other’s work. Getting that kind of honest feedback is a great way to improve in the editors.

I’ve also had some pretty regular correspondence through comments with a few other creators; Vultrio and monsterlord come to mind. Comment exchanges with other creators have lead to inspiration for a number of my creations.

Sporedum: Looking through your 200 creations, it’s hard to pick out one that is the best. Do you have a personal favorite? And what is your favorite creation created by another player?

Karl-EL: My favorite of mine is almost always my most recent, whatever that may be. I think that’s probably true for most of us. I do, however, have an irrational attachment to and affection for my Deldaban. I’m not really sure why. Maybe it’s a combination of his underdog status in his fight against my evil Vinaw, along with the fact that I love orange. Whatever the case may be, I’ve always liked him ever since I hit save that last time and uploaded him to the server.

As far as other people’s creations go, there are so many great creators out there and so many great creations amongst the many millions. When the game first came out I remember dissecting the works of DiabloDog, G3NJI, mo289, and others. Taking apart great creations helped my understanding of the editor grow in leaps and bounds and I think it is the fastest way to improve your creation skills. I recommend it almost daily to someone either through a comment or on the Sporum. Some of my favorite artists still are Andeavor, Granite25, DiabloDog, and Parkaboy. Those four are all pretty much synonymous with greatness. Some less well known talents that I think doesn’t get enough recognition are Hutch63Avynire, and Yorpy. But if push came to shove and I had to pick one all time favorite creation of someone else’s I would have to pick Tundro’s Mastadontoid. Unfortunately, Tundro seems to have left the SPORE community over what he perceived to be corporate greed when they published the Creepy and Cute parts pack. I had to re-upload the creature for this interview.

Sporedum: You mentioned the relationship between your Deldaban and the Vinaw Empire – do you have a story or theme behind all your creations?

Karl-EL: Not for all my creations but for most. The ones that don’t have descriptions are either earlier works or were developed in game. One of the things I noticed early on while perusing the pedia was how the description of a creation could completely change or enhance my perception of it. There have been numerous times when I felt the creation itself may not have been the most interesting, but the description or story that went along with it made me laugh and in so doing earned a comment and an up-rate. A simple two or three sentence blurb can immerse the audience into the world the author intended and turn a good creation into a great one. I wanted to be able to have that same affect on my audience and so I started to incorporate descriptions with my creations. It also makes it more interesting for me when I can weave a story between my various creatures. I think Galactic Adventures is going to really help the community flesh out these stories we’ve been developing for so long.

Sporedum: Which editor is your favorite to create in (creature, building, vehicle, spaceship)? Why?

Karl-EL: I’m definitely most comfortable in the Creature Creator, and far-and-away the vast majority of my creations come from there. The few times I have ventured into the other editors, however, has netted positive results and so I intend on starting to tinker around more with the vehicle and space editor, and maybe even start doing buildings. I’m not sure if I’m daring enough to get that far outside my comfort zone yet. Working on that Space Civ Contest held by Moejoe18 and Beta_Psi really forced me to come out of my shell a bit more and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I’m definitely gonna go back and make some more vehicles for my other species.

Sporedum: What would be the most essential piece of advice you could give for people to improve their creations?

Karl-EL: I guess I would have to go back to that same advice my aunt gave me when I was five; observe and study. Things are the way they are for a reason. Animals are built the way they are because physics dictates so. Limbs and joints attach in certain ways because that construction design is efficient. Gravity, to a greater or lesser degree, is a universal phenomenon. A creature’s posture should reflect the environment in which it lives. Things have to be built to withstand the pressures being placed upon them.

Observe everything. That included other artists’ SPORE creations. There are thousands if not millions of amazing creations in the pedia library. And just like the library down the street, everything is free to download. Take the ones you like into your editor and reverse engineer them. Take them apart and see what makes them tick. One of my first big “Ah-ha moments” was when I downloaded DiabloDog’s stegosaurus and saw for the first time the use of dual mouths to create an entirely new head shape. It opened my eyes to the possibilities inherent in the editor. Anything can be anything in the editor. It is what you make it to be. Since then I have had untold numbers of “Ah-ha moments” because I am always trying to learn from the other talented artists around the community. You have to be willing to learn all the time.

Sporedum: Are you excited about the release of Spore Galactic Adventures on the 23rd of June? And how do you think you will use the adventures creator to advance you creations?

Karl-EL: Absolutely. I think SPORE has the potential to be an amazing game, and I think Galactic Adventures promises to take it another step in that direction. One of my big beefs with the game has always been the simplistic game play, and rinse-and-repeat repetitiveness of the space stage. GA looks like it’s going to fix some of the problems with that aspect of the game. I’m looking forward to finally being able to dictate the personalities of my various races and developing the storylines I have built up around them that link them all together. Even more so, I am looking forward to seeing what other people put together. There are some great imaginations around here. I’m sure we’re going to see some amazing missions.

Sporedum: If there was one parts pack you could get, what would it be?

Karl-EL: Well, considering we can expect to get a bunch of new outfitter parts in GA, I will take that off my list for the immediate future. Since Creepy and Cute was a creature parts pack we can expect the next parts pack will be more vehicle or building parts. I guess that’s fine. I’m sure that would make a ton of people really happy. What I think would be even more useful than a specific parts pack, however, is a patch that allows us to use all parts from every editor in any other editor. There’s a hack that allows you to do that, but I haven’t had much success with it. The colors get all messed up when you mix-and-match editors. It’s too bad really because that simple tweak would open up more options than any single parts pack could offer and it would be a free patch, so the community would come out way ahead for what seems like little effort on Maxis’
part.

Creator Spotlight: Mouthwash

Posted by ballightning on May 7, 2009

Mouthwash is one of the more popular creators, with a focus towards realism, and the design of objects. Read on for the full interview.

ProfileMouthwash

Your creations are awesome! Do you find any particular inspiration for your work?

I try to find inspiration from everywhere, but I find most of my inspiration from nature and real world animals. It may not look like it, but deep down inside, most of my creations are really sea urchins, wolves, and venus flytraps on a bad day! I may focus on a single characteristic of an animal, or take several traits from different species and make a hybrid. For mechanical designs, I look at the world around me: videogames, movies… even common, every day items sitting on my desk all serve as starting points for a ship or vehicle. Humor is also a source of inspiration for me.

You get a lot of great ratings for your creations, as well as many comments. Have you met anyone during your experience playing Spore?

Yes, I have…. I’ve met many people, in fact! I knew many way back last year when the community was on different forums and we were still using the stand-alone Creature Creator. Although many members of the old community have since moved on and no longer create, I still swap comments regularly with Doomnova, who is a very talented and active creator. GrandPeep is another creator from the Creature Creator days, and I got to know him a bit when I helped him flesh out the tutorial for utilizing the asymmetrical limb glitch in the creature creator. I met Thobewill though a mutual love of Starcraft creations, and met Masscolder when I was trying to get to the bottom of an issue with the mass-downrating of popular players’ creations. Trust me, that was annoying to deal with. Recently, I have also gotten to know the personalities of PatTheWandererDidzo,ChimerahoundPsychichazard, and many others through the Spore Forums

Looking through your 350+ creations, it’s hard to pick out one that is the best. Do you have a personal favorite? And what is your favorite creation by another player?

Oooh… that is tough. Just one? Well…. I would say one of my most favorite creations would be my Asterlux. Its a very old creation of mine, and I wouldn’t consider it my best, but I think it’s a creature with a lot of personality. My inspiration for it were stars and constellations, and I recreated the idea through shiny macknes connected through knurldowns and the end result is a unique design that I have yet to see anywhere else. The Asterlux (whose name is derived from Latin words for “star” and “light”) is a little special to me because I used it to win one of my first contests on the old EA Spore Forums.

My favorite by another player is equally tough to choose. I can’t give you a top creation, but one of my favorites would be Dirtymeat’s “Sharna’s Boneslave“. It has a very elegant, open design. There’s just so many curves and a lot of details to look at. The ship is pure eye candy. The Boneship’s symmetrical design is what inspired me to make many of my ships with radial symmetry.

Which editor is your favorite to create in (creature, building, vehicle, spaceship)? Why?

My favorite editor has always been the creature creator. I love biology: I am a marine biologist undergrad and so I have always been partial to the organics. Just being able to see your design come to life with a variety of animations has always been a fun little experience. Maxis did a phenomenal job of making created creatures come to life. A close second would be the spaceship creator, simply due to the immense flexibility and ease-of-use of the editor.

Many of your creations have a very stylized look – do you have a story or theme behind your creations?

A sign of a talented musician is someone who is able to compose in many different musical styles. I try to emulate that by constantly looking for new styles and themes for my creations. Cute or scary, earthlike or alien, organic or technological, serious or joke creations… I try to create in different styles to retain my flexibility as a creator and spur creativity. I also constantly look for new and unique ways to use parts. Sometimes I write creation backround stories (see my sejilian series) but most often I choose to let the creation speak for its self, and leave the description area for funny or interesting notes…. after all, isn’t the game supposed to tell the creature/vehicle’s story when you play?

Your creations seem like they have gotten more sophisticated as you continued to create. Do you feel your creations have evolved with time?

Oh, most definitely. As time goes on you just learn more tricks and better ways to use parts. Its just a natural part of learning the game. At first most of my creations were centered on aspects of biology. In the writing field, they say you write what you know.  As both a biologist and a creator, I think the same applies for me. Even most of my early spaceships, vehicles, and buildings were influenced by biology. As I grew more comfortable with the game, I began seeking out more artistic and alien designs, and recently started experimenting with recreations of real-life objects and scenes.

What would be the most essential piece of advice you could give for people to improve their creations?

First and foremost, I would say that some good advice is to look at other people’s creations. Study them. Pull them apart in the editors. If you see something you like, grab it and find out what makes it good. You can get lots of insight on new styles, new ways of using parts, and even tricks you never realized existed! There’s no shame in pulling ideas from others (just make sure you give the original creators some credit!) I myself have pulled inspiration from DoomnovaCeecemo289SlivaStariDirtymeat, and others. There is no way I would have been making everything I did if I kept to myself. Utilizing the spore community has been a big help to me, so thanks to you all!

Are you excited about the release of Spore Galactic Adventures on the 23rd of June? And how do you think you will use the adventures creator to advance you creations?

Spore is an ambitious game with big shoes to fill, and Galactic Adventures looks to be an promising expansion that will help realize the game Spore was meant to be. I am interested to see how the new content fleshes out the game as a whole. I am a creator first and foremost, and I was never too interested in the actual gameplay of spore (I have to admit, I never even beat it!) I may get the game eventually, depending on if I can spare the money.  The mission editor looks fantastic. I believe that if I get it, I would be spending quite some time creating my own missions.

Creator Spotlight: smallboy1995

Posted by ballightning on April 25, 2009

Smallboy1995 is a fantastic creating, including the amazing vox series (which are the to images on the right) along with many other amazing creations.

If you think you have a creator who deserves a spotlight, post a comment below or in our thread on the official forums.

Sporedum’s Creator/Creature Spotlight Homepage

Creation DetailLocation: America

Profile: smallboy1995
Sporedum: Your creations are awesome! Do you find any particular inspiration for your work?

SmallBoy1995: Well, it depends whether or not I have anything in my head at the time. If not, I’ll browse the features and MPN, or look some pictures up. If that doesn’t help, I’ll think back to some of the Sci-Fi novels I’ve read, like Ender’s Game, Necropath, or Helix.

Sporedum: You get a lot of great ratings for your creations, as well as many comments. Have you met anyone during your experience playing Spore?

Creation Detail

SmallBoy1995: Alkalinahid was very helpful in giving comments, criticism and support. I would come home to about 15-20 comments all by them. I’ve also met some nice people on the forums, like Thobewill (Became friends through competing in his contests) and Egratt (from C.U.S.T.O.S.)

Sporedum: Looking through your 350+ creations, it’s hard to pick out one that is the best. Do you have a personal favorite? And what is your favorite creation by another player?

SmallBoy1995: My favorite creation would be my Vox Planet Cracker, my first and only featured creation. My favorite newer creation would be my Blood Seeker, which made it to the top of the MPN. My favorite creation by a different player would be the Pleasure Dome by Andeavor, which inspired the Vox Planet Cracker.

Creation Detail

Sporedum: Which editor is your favorite to create in (creature, building, vehicle, spaceship)? Why?

SmallBoy1995: I am split between 2 editors. Those 2 would be the Creature Editor, and any of the Vehicle Editors. The Creature Editor was the first 1 I ever created in, giving me experience. The Vehicle Editor would be because it was the first editor I tried once I got the game.

Sporedum: Many of your creations have a very stylized look – do you have a story or theme behind your creations?

SmallBoy1995: In short; No. Why? I have made a few series’ but most are just inspired by whatever comes up.

Sporedum: Your creations seem like they have gotten more sophisticated as you continued to create. Do you feel your creations have evolved with time?

SmallBoy1995: I do, but not essentially due to time. I would say, after looking through the pages of great creators and disassembling their creations and learning, has helped them evolve. I once got a comment saying “If your birth date is 1995, then I can’t wait to see how you improve as you get older.” I responded with a comment saying age doesn’t play into it.

Sporedum: What would be the most essential piece of advice you could give for people to improve their creations?

Creation Detail

SmallBoy1995: I would tell them to look through the MPN and the featured creations and take them apart to learn new techniques. It works very well.

Sporedum: Are you excited about the release of Spore Galactic Adventures on the 23rd of June? And how do you think you will use the adventures creator to advance you creations?

SmallBoy1995: I’m neutral about the release. Not to say I won’t probably buy it, but I’m just not too sure. I really don’t think it will help me advance my creations, but it may throw some new inspiration into the air. Who knows? Maybe it will help.

Creator Sporlight: MSCE5

Posted by ballightning on April 16, 2009

MSCE5 is one of the most well known creators on the Europe (UK) official forums, and has started to create some fantastic creations. Read on for more!

If you think you have a creator who deserves a spotlight, post a comment below or in our thread on the official forums.

Sporedum’s Creator/Creature Spotlight Homepage

Creation DetailLocation: Århus, Denmark

ProfileMSCE5 (aka, Marcolon)

Sporedum: Your creations are really well thought out, and the design on some of them is amazing! Do you find any particular inspiration for your work?

MSCE5: Well when i’m creating new stuff for the game i usually get my inspiration from movies, games, famous creators etc. Not to mention my friends who i’ve gotten alot of inspiration from. Like 04starrad who inspired me to start doing Mechs recently or Rebecca1208 who i seem to get inspiration, for new creatures, from all the time.

Creation Detail

Sporedum: You may not be as popular as some creators, but you have a steadily growing fan base. Have you met anyone during your experience playing Spore?

MSCE5: Yes! I’ve met alot of great people on the Spore UK forum. Our community there is far from as big as the American is, yet we still know each other well. I have alot of friends there.

Sporedum: Looking through your 460+ creations, it’s hard to pick out one that is the best. Do you have a personal favorite? And what is your favorite creation created by another player?

MSCE5: Well i actually have a few that i like more than the others. Recently i made a Rock concert with the building editor which i think is very good (judging myself). Also a few days ago i made 2 mechs based upon Rebecca1208’s Kyrozi’s which im very proud of =)

Creation DetailSporedum: Which editor is your favorite to create in (creature, building, vehicle, spaceship)? Why?

MSCE5: Building editor by far! I love that the chances are so many! Theres assymetry which makes it so much easier to create something good looking. Its also the editor which i believe is the one im most experienced with.

Sporedum: What is your favorite part of spore? And if you could do one thing to improve spore, what would it be?

MSCE5: Well… Right now i play most for the editors. The possibilities with spore are infinite. And i think that if i had to add anything to the actual game it would be a more realistic look, as well as a longer playtime with more variety in gameplay. Maybe bring back some of the old elements that were shown off back in 2005 when will wright demonstrated spore. The physics back then were amazing.

Creation Detail

Sporedum: Many of your creations have a very stylized look – do you have a story or theme behind your creations?

MSCE5: Well i dont really have an actual story behind many of my creations. Only a few. Which would be My Rubicon creature that i made many months ago. I actually started making machinimas for youtube with them. However, i’d say my favourite theme is probably the futuristic theme which many of my creations do have. Im just that type of person who’s very mixed in flavors…

Sporedum: What would be the most essential piece of advice you could give for people to improve their creations?

MSCE5: What has helped for me is to keep on creating and practicing in the editors! A good thing is also to look at the famous creators creations. Another tip is to pull their creations apart to see how they acrtually create them and set them toghether (ofcourse without sharing cause that would be like stealing)

Sporedum: What spore communities have you been involved in, and how has this impacted on your Spore experience?

MSCE5: I’ve been involved alot in the Youtube spore community aswell as the official spore forum for the UK. I spend every day on the UK forum

Creation Detail

Sporedum: Are you excited about the release of Spore Galactic Adventures on the 23rd of June? And how do you think you will use the adventures creator to advance you creations?

MSCE5: Yes indeed! I’m actually at this point very hyped about the game! I cant wait for it to release… I’m sure it’ll add alot of variety to the game and the adventure editor surely looks interesting…

Sporedum: If there was one parts pack you could get, what would it be?

MSCE5: This is a hard question… Hmm… I think that it would be cool to sorta have a parts pack for robots and mechanical creatures. Seeing that i’ve spend alot of my time recently creating mechs… My experience with mechs are growing but actual parts would be very nice =)

Creator Spotlight: beta_psi

Posted by ballightning on April 11, 2009

Beta_psi is a more recent creator, with most of his creations were made this year. His creations have improved dramatically over the last months and now are extraordinarily detailed and throught out. However Beta_psi will be leaving the spore community for his dream job. Read on for more!

If you think you have a creator who deserves a spotlight, post a comment below or in our thread on the official forums.

Sporedum’s Creator/Creature Spotlight Homepage

Creation Detail

Location: USA, Midwest

Profile: beta_psi

Sporedum: Your creations are awesome! Do you find any particular inspiration for your work?

Beta_psi: Thanks for the compliment and for the interview. I definitely draw on my many interests and place them in my creations. About half of my creations are planned before I began working on them, the other half evolve as I worked on them, and nearly all incorporate topics like medicine, mathematics, computer science, history, architecture, chemistry and biology into the description and background of the creation.

Sporedum: You get a lot of great ratings for your creations, as well as many comments. Have you met anyone during your experience playing Spore?

Beta_psi: I’ve never met anyone in person, but I’ve made a lot of buddies. Hilight was the first to introduce me to the online Spore community, inviting me to join a sunbike contest. From there, I began to really follow the MPN and watch sporepedia for great creators. It wasn’t until Serevanth spotlighted me, and in the same week I had my first feature that I really began to interact with many others online. I tried to keep up with the many comments and respond to all of them, but after a while I just couldn’t keep up. I apologize to anyone whose comment I didn’t return. There is a pretty stable buddy base, though, that I am able to keep up with and exchange comments regularly.

Recently I teamed up with jtc209 and Vultrio for Thaleron’s Dragon Fanatic Club Team contest. We were able to work together to create some pretty phenomenal dragons with an awesome back story by Vultrio. And most recently, Moejoe18 and I are working together on a ‘Space Civ Contest’, which includes over 30 teams and close to 100 creators. It has been great to see the work of others and interact with them.

Creation Detail

Sporedum: Looking through your 280+ creations, it’s hard to pick out one that is the best. Do you have a personal favorite? And what is your favorite creation by another player?

Beta_psi: One of my favorites, that hasn’t had much recognition, is the ‘solar fly‘. I finished the construction completely on it, then painted it–and it just lit up! I was really astonished, and it is still one of my favorites.  To chose another creation by someone else is difficult. There’s over 70,000 creations downloaded to my computer, and there are so many skilled creators in so many areas. I can’t choose just one!
Sporedum: Which editor is your favorite to create in (creature, building, vehicle, spaceship)? Why?

Beta_psi: I really like all of them. When I started I really enjoyed the creature editor–mostly because I only had creature creator for a month or two. When I bought Spore, I enjoyed the freedom of the space editor, as well as all the parts. It was only recently that I have found a lot of enjoyment in the much more difficult to use, but very versatile building editor. The vehicle editor, is my least favorite–perhaps because it is also the most restricting.

Creation Detail

Sporedum: Many of your creations have a very stylized look – do you have a story or theme behind your creations?

Beta_psi: Quite a few of my creations have a story behind them. My Atlantis series was inspired by the news that a someone found a grid-like pattern on Google Earth, just off the coast of Africa. Google quickly let people know that this was an error due to placing images together, and that in fact, the lost city of Atlantis had not been found. This launched me into an Atlantean civilization of nomads that would spend time on a planet for a while on their city-ships, then depart as the indigenous species became closer to discovering their presence. I had a lot of fun with the idea, and I think a lot of people enjoyed the set as well.

Other sets stem from other inspiration. Tseme’kwes was inspired by the Yeti, and NW American Native Americans–I actually found a scanned in copy of the Lummi dictionary and used the Native American names for the creations. Chi was inspired by Oriental architecture. Mullerians inspired by early US feminists in the US: Jill Ker Conway for one. Many have other meanings that can be discovered by a Wikipedia or Google search.

Creation Detail

Sporedum: Your creations seem like they have gotten more sophisticated as you continued to create. Do you feel your creations have evolved with time?

Beta_psi: Oh yes, most definitely. My early creations–most of which I’ve deleted from Sporepedia, look much like the creations on the ‘newest creations’ page. Taking apart creations of those on the MPN taught me a lot about what could be done, as well as experimenting on my own.

Sporedum: What would be the most essential piece of advice you could give for people to improve their creations?

Beta_psi: Try something new. In the creature editor, really angle the spine and limbs, and pick random colors and textures–work backwards from this. Learn to use the [shift], [tab], and [alt] keys in the other editors. Make a creation based on a picture/building/vehicle outside of Spore. Have fun!

Creation Detail

Sporedum: Are you excited about the release of Spore Galactic Adventures on the 23rd of June? And how do you think you will use the adventures creator to advance you creations?

Beta_psi: Unfortunately, I won’t be a part of Galactic Adventures. At the end of June, I start my dream job, a residency in surgery, and I simply won’t have time to create. I might buy it and pop in every few weeks when I have a little time. And although I’ll be leaving this great community very soon and I’ll miss a lot of the people and art here, I’m pretty excited to enter a field where I can put my skills to use for the greater good of others.

Creator Spotlight: Azulon

Posted by ballightning on April 7, 2009

Azulon has been creating ever since the creature creator came out in June last year, and in the past few months, Azulon has risen high in Creature/Outfitter world. With 2 features (1)(2) and over 3000 comments,  Azulon is now one of the most well known creators on the sporum. If you think you have a creator who deserves a spotlight, post a comment below or in our thread on the official forums.

Sporedum: Your creations are very complex, and some of the characters you’ve created are great! Do you find any particular inspiration for your work?

Creation Detail

Azulon: I get inspiration from other creators most of the time, people like G3nji, Doomnova, Masscolder and Werderfan2012, among others. I see their creations and try to get tips and uncommon part uses so I can improve my own style. When I started creating I took a long time analyzing Aaarrrggg’s creations too, her creations made me want to get better. And sometimes I get inspired by nature too, so I have creations based on elements like fire and water.

Sporedum: You get a lot of great ratings for your creations, as well as many thousands of comments. Have you made any friends through your creations?

Azulon: Well, my creatures started getting comments when I began using the Sporum, and it took me a long while to do it, I create since the creature creator trial days but only went for the forum a few months ago. There I entered some contests- won some, lost others- and little by little I started getting some recognition and some people who comment my creations on a regular basis. Now with the Knurl Down Clan, where I’m a Clanmaster together with Doomnova and G3nji, people are really giving my creations attention.

Creation DetailSporedum: Looking through all your 500+ creations, it’s hard to pick out one that is the best. Do you have a personal favorite? And what is your favorite creation by another player?

Azulon: I like most of my creations, so it is really hard to point the best, but if I am to choose one it would be my Grim Reaper, I liked a lot how it turned up in the end. By other players I’m not sure but the one that got more comments was the Elder Magical Golen, I think mostly because it was the one that got featured, but even before that I received a alot of good feedback on him.

Sporedum: Which editor is your favorite to create in (creature, building, vehicle, spaceship) and why?

Creation Detail

Azulon: I like the creature creator better, including the outfitters, as it is the one I handle easier and where I get my most beautiful results. I also like the building creator, but I still have to improve a lot in this one. People can say that the spaceship creator is the one that gives you more freedom but creating from warriors to savage aliens appeals more to me.

Sporedum: Many of your creations have a very stylized look, especially your characters – do you have a story or theme behind your creations?

Azulon: Yes and no. In some of my creatures I try to follow a theme, like “ four guys, each one representing one season” or “Tortured monsters” and create a sporecast to gather them, but in some I get a part that I want to use in a new way and create a whole creature around it, sometimes even discovering other new things in the process.

Creation DetailSporedum: Your creations seem like they have gotten more sophisticated as you continued to create. Do you feel your creations have evolved with time?

Azulon: Yes, as I got more experienced with the creators and discovered more uses for the parts my creations improved a whole lot. When I began I used the parts in a very simple pattern, ears were only ears, mouths could only go within heads and in natural spots. Now I try to use the parts in different ways, to give my creatures a more exotic look. I also started using parts I didn’t like at first. Now I even try to redo some of my older creatures in better ways, if, looking at my page, you stumble into a “cruel” creature that’s because this creature is an old one redone, so you can look at my first pages and see how the original looked.

Creation Detail

Sporedum: What would be the most essential piece of advice you could give for people to improve their creations?

Azulon: Always try to use the parts in new ways- twist, combine, put them upside down, do everything you can do with them. This way your creatures will call attention and people will see how creative you are. And give them nice colors too, sometimes the coloring is the difference between a good creature and an awesome one. Oh, and for the ones who don’t know, the TAB button helps wonder when creating.

Sporedum: Are you excited about the release of Spore Galactic Adventures on the 23rd of June? And how do you think you will use the adventures creator to advance you creations?

Azulon: Well, I really stopped actually playing spore asides from the creators, because I got to space stage and had nothing to do after it, so if Galactic Adventures will bring new objectives and the same freedom that marks the creators, to the main game them I’ll buy it as soon as it gets to the stores. And if it expands the outfitters I’ll be very happy, because I think the outfitters have too few parts, they could be much better.

Posted by ballightning on April 4, 2009

Today we look at Jim3321, who is a relatively unknown creator. However Jim3221’s creations are just as stunning as others who have thousands of comments. Like Techno605 has a specialty in the building editor, Jim3321 specializes in the creature editor. We are now going to interview all the creators which we spotlight. If you think you have a creator who deserves a spotlight, post a comment below or in our thread on the official forums.

Creation Detail

Location: USA

Profile: Jim3321

Sporedum: Your creations are awesome! Do you find any particular inspiration for your work?

Jim3321: My inspirations come from many places, some from art, others from movies. I would say most of my inspiration comes from other Spore users and learning their techniques and ways of detailing. Music is also a very big factor for me. I gain inspiration from classic rock, metal and jazz music.

Sporedum: You get a lot of great ratings for your creations, as well as many comments. Have you met anyone during your experience playing Spore?

Jim3321: I’ve met many friends, and am still making new ones! Rantalia gave me a lot of support when I was just learning my techniques for creating. Also Serevanth helped me with getting publicity. Without other players, I would be probably unrecognized. I truly appreciate all the support I have received.

Creation Detail
Sporedum: Looking through your 130+ creations, it’s hard to pick out one that is the best. Do you have a personal favorite? And what is your favorite creation by another player?

Jim3321: Hmm…..My personal favorite would probably be Rhien, who was heavily inspired by the work of Gastje. I love that the head is very vague and only kinda resembles a head. Probably my favorite from someone else would be the Panther Alien by Gryphon57. The stance it’s at makes it look like it wants to pounce.

Sporedum: Which editor is your favorite to create in (creature, building, vehicle, spaceship)? Why?

Jim3321: Definitely creature. Why? Because I spend nearly all of my time in Spore playing the creature editor.

Creation DetailSporedum: Many of your creations have a very stylized look – do you have a story or theme behind your creations?

Jim3321: Well, I just try to make my creatures either alien or some form of evil, haha! I was really into the Alien series, so I made many creatures based off of xenomorphs. Their heads were always a challenge to me, until I saw people like Virakotxa and Gryphon57 and saw how they made xeno heads, and that was a big help to me.

Sporedum: Your creations seem like they have gotten more sophisticated as you continued to create. Do you feel your creations have evolved with time?

Jim3321: Yes, of course. If you compare my Coelodon to some of my newer stuff, you would see that my newer stuff has cleaner color palettes than Coelodon has, and more distinct part patterns, etc. I have gone through a huge change since August when I first got the Creature Creator.

Creation Detail
Sporedum: What would be the most essential piece of advice you could give for people to improve their creations?

Jim3321:  I would say to just experiment, and use templates often. They can really help with creature posture and limb placement early on. I would also ask advice from well-known creators. Hey, you could even ask me, haha!
Sporedum: Are you excited about the release of Spore Galactic Adventures on the 23rd of June? And how do you think you will use the adventures creator to advance you creations?

Jim3321: Yes, I am very excited! I’ve seen some of the new parts, and they look like they could be cool to manipulate in the outfitters. The mission creator will also be really cool, it will add a lot of depth to the space phase. I’m really looking forward for it’s release!

Creator Spotlight: Techno605

Posted by ballightning on March 30, 2009

It is not often that I spotlight a certain creator. But Techno605 was just an amazing creator, and probably the best building creator in the world, for me not to feature him. You can find Techno605’s Profile here.

So I ask myself, what is so good about these creations? The colour on all of them has been used to perfection. Techno605 also has used texture along with a smart design to achieve the perfect looking PNG for the Sporepedia. The third image is my favourite with its unique and amazingly coloured spiral design. What is your favourite?

Do you have a favourite creator? Post a comment below with a link to their profile page and we may feature them! In the future, you will be able to find all the past features by clicking on the special category which can be found at the end of the post called “Creator Spotlight”.

If you like any of these creations, don’t forget to go and rate them up!

Creator Spotlight: Slartibartfast38

Posted by ballightning on January 28, 2009

For this SporeDay we have 2 new interviews, we’ll post the other one soon but first on to the creator Slatibartfast38, who has one of the largest fan bases out of any creator for spore. He has over 1000 subscribers and recently was a winner in the official holiday creation contest.

Here is full interview.

Do you find any particular inspiration for your work?

I find inspiration in just about everything life has to offer. My 2 sons inspire me daily. They are fine young men, and I couldn’t be more proud. I tend to get alot of ideas for the names of my spaceships from the music I was listenting to at the time I was creating. Some of my ideas have even come from the lyrics themselves. Images I may see on TV that day tend to have the same effect.

Slartibartfast38

Also, it is a constant pleasure to see the daily new creations from the community in general. Each and every creation has a great deal of effort and thought put into it. Knowing how much effort each person put into their creation is an inspiration.

To be perfectly honest, this is the first game I’ve ever purchased for a PC, and it has been a mind opening experience. I enjoy every aspect of it, and the freedom of expression is amazing. So the game ‘Spore’ itself has been a creative inspiration for me.

Have you met anyone during your experience playing spore?
Slartibartfast38

First of all, I’d like to thank everyone for giving me those ratings and making those comments. I have met so many fantastic people since starting this game. It’s hard to imagine what life was like before ‘Spore’. I literally could go on for another four pages. I am terribly sorry to anyone I may have left out.
