Chris Hecker and 23 other spore developers laid off.

Chris Hecker has revealed that 24 members of the spore team have been laid off, including himself.

I would like to personally give tribute to Chris who not only creating the procedural animation, various prototypes many years ago and successfully developed assymetry, he also has helped the modding community with various problems on many occasions.

Chris and the other 23 members of the spore team will be missed, and here at sporedum, we wish them all the best in the future! Watch this space for news on Chris Hecker’s new indie game SpyParty.

I just got laid off from Maxis!

I can’t say that it was a shock, but it was still somewhat surprising. It’s funny, you occasionally hear about people who were laid off, and from the safety of your job you can’t help but think, “Even though it’s not supposed to be merit based, that’s gotta be in the mix; they wouldn’t actually let the good people go.” Then it happens to you, and you’re like, “Hey, wait a second…”  🙂

I had a truly great time working on Spore. I was lucky to get to contribute to some really amazing stuff over the past six years. In the past few months, I chose to work on smaller things that generated lots of goodwill but no revenue, which tends to be a problem when you’re expensive and the economy is down! Still, we got asymmetry into a patch, which has enabled some really incredibly insanecreatures and vehicles. Next I was going to do some research on improving searching and browsing assets in the incredible resource that is the Sporepedia. I think there are some amazing opportunities to mine the user created assets if the browsing and tagging facilities can be improved. Will and I used to debate the best way to classify the assets, and hopefully we’ll see some neat stuff going forward there.

I also got to work with some excellent game developers, many of whom have become my good friends. I hope the others who got laid off (there were 24 in all, I think) will land on their feet and do great work, and I hope the folks who are left will try to carry the Maxis torch and keep making games that are different and expand the boundaries of our art form.

What’s Next?

As for me and my future, if you attended the always-interesting Experimental Gameplay Workshop this year at the Game Developers Conference, you may have seen the indie game I’ve been working on in my spare time. I believe the idea is quite strong, so I was thinking about quitting to work on it more seriously in January. Now I guess the choice has been made for me, so assuming I can get the financial numbers to add up, I will start cranking on it.

EA Maxis-Spore Hit with Layoffs

The Maxis headquarters in Redwood, California have been the host of the latest job cuts as the gaming industry faces the global recession. In the home place of spore today, Maxis have confirmed that members of the spore team have been layed off.

“Often in the video game industry, the size of a studio fluctuates in response to business conditions. In this case, EA has taken action to reduce the workforce at Maxis as we focus the business and focus Maxis,” an EA spokesperson told IGN.

EA is still fully backing Spore, mentioning some of its upcoming titles.

“EA remains fully committed to SPORE and other IP within Maxis, with games planned for launch in the next few months, including Spore Hero, coming to the Wii for the first time, and Spore Hero Arena on the DS. All eligible employees will receive severance and outplacement assistance.” 

EA wouldn’t comment on how many employees were let go, however.

The EA failure: Sims 3 has SecuRom

It was only a few weeks ago that EA promised that the Sims 3 will not have SecuRom in an official posting on the Sims boards.

EA has now backflipped, and fluttereyes from Reclaim Your Game has been sent an email stating that the Sims 3 does contain SecuRom.

We will be bringing you all the latest about this, but check out Reclaim your Game (and the Prism forums) for more info.

Here are some screenshots as evidence, and we hope that EA has not taken a doubleback on this and that Sims 3 will not contain SecuRom.

Please note that there is no hard evidence that Sims 3 contains SecuRom.

Seems Maxis is hiring more people for a new simulation game. If you remembered last month, Maxis was hiring someone for a fast paced MMO. Now the question is, are these related, are we finally getting a Sims/Spore MMO?

EA’s (Evil?) Master Plan!!

Sp-Banega-0re from the official UK forum has made a very interesting, and valid point about what might be going through the minds of the people in power at EA. Note that this is not my opinion.

I went for a walk a few days ago when I realised what EA’s evil plan actually is, and now that Will’s left, nobody can save us!

How many of you don’t have C+C? I don’t, and I can tell you that it is INCREDIBLY annoying that you can’t use, edit or even view creatures that use it. It is so tempting to buy C+C to avoid this problem, but if I buy that, I’ll buy all the others that are bound to come, and waste both money and PC space.

So if the problem is this bad after just one small parts pack, what about when another gets released? And another? We can probably expect about 7 different parts packs, not including proper expansions that will probably contain some parts. Imagine what a nightmare it will be with 7 different parts packs in the Spore game, and you can’t view the creations unless you have every part that has been used in the creation.

The top creators will undoubtedly buy every single one, and use a lot of different parts in each creation, so what will happen to the people who can’t afford all the expansions, or have other hobbies to buy things for? Their game will be ruined, unless they buy every single expansion. Yet again, EA have proven that all they care about is money.

Lucy Bradshaw on Will Wright’s Stupid Fun Club and the Future of Spore

So now that we all know that Will Wright is leaving Maxis to run the think tank Stupid Fan Club (jointly owned by EA), Lucy Bradshaw has become the new head of Maxis. Gamedaily managed to get a phone interview with her.

For now, Maxis remains entrenched in the Spore universe. The game was one of the most hyped titles of 2008 and continues to be quite successful for EA. In fact, Bradshaw stressed that it’s EA’s most successful new IP launch ever. But how does Wright’s departure affect the future direction of the franchise? It should be business as usual, according to Bradshaw.

“One of the things Maxis has is a wealth of very strong creative individuals. They collaborated with Will on his vision for Spore through its fruition to becoming a product. It is a very interesting platform to continue to evolve,” she stated. “We’re coming out with Galactic Adventures in June and that will just be our first expansion pack in the franchise, and we’re taking the franchise in different directions as well, releasing Spore Hero [on Wii] and Spore: Hero Arena [on DS]. Those are announced for this calendar year and Spore: Creature Keeper [on PC] is aimed at a younger audience… someone who had fun with Creature Creatorbut isn’t a core gamer at this stage. So we’re really poised as we were with The Sims to really evolve this property in different directions, and we’ve got the creative talent here to do so. What Will has developed here along with me is a real interesting culture at Maxis… and that legacy will very much continue to be a force as we move forward.”

BREAKING NEWS: Will Wright Leaves EA/Maxis

Will Wright is leaving Maxis…..




Maxis is finally leaving EA after working with them for 12 years, and even longer with Maxis. He is now going to run the think tank Stupid Fun Club, in a partnership with EA. It is a sad day for the Spore community, especially after all he has done for it. He will still be producing new games, however he will be researching and investigating new ways to do this.

And executive producer of Spore, Lucy Bradshaw, now will head Maxis.


Will has also written a note at the Sporums in which I’ll also add to this post:

Hey everyone.

There’s a little press release going out today as we speak (well actually I’m not speaking, I’m typing… (and I guess you’re not even listening, you’re reading (unless you’re having your new Kindle read this to you in which case you are listening) but you’re definitely not reading this “as” the press release is going out, and I’m certainly typing this hours before the fact….) anyway. (I suck at writing)

The gist of the story is that I’m leaving EA (well, not really, I’ll explain) to start (well, not quite start, it’s actually been around for quite a while in a rather different form) … let’s say dive into a new venture, The Stupid Fun Club. The Stupid Fun was actually started many years ago by myself and my friend Mike Winter, we met while competing in Robot Wars and Battlebots. It was apparent to us that one day the robots would take over the world and we decided we wanted to be on the winning side, so our initial charter was to do whatever we could to usher in our new mechanical overlords.

Along the way we ending up building and prototyping a lot of… odd stuff. People would come by our shop and get interested in this stuff for various reasons. Some of this stuff sparked new creative ideas, even (*gasp*) ideas that may have “commercial, entertainment value” (this is how you talk when you’ve been around lawyers and MBA’s too long).

At some point we started showing some of this stuff to the people at EA. They got excited by the prospect of us pursuing these projects commercially (or that’s what they said anyway, I think they just want to be on the winning side of the coming robotic revolution as well). So we started talking to them (EA, not the robots, though we do talk to them as well, but the robot responses are cryptic at best) about getting involved and investing in The Stupid Fun Club (we asked the robots first but they’re all broke).

So as things worked out I decided to jump into my work at the club more or less full time. But at The Stupid Club we’ll be working on new games (along with EA) as well as other kinds of projects with different partners.

I can’t talk about specific projects coming out of SFC just yet (alas, the robots won’t let me), but as things develop I’ll find a way to keep those of you who are interested informed about what we’re doing (but not with a blog…I’ll never have a blog). A major aspect of the projects I’ve worked on has always been the player community, that won’t change.

EA’s Mod: Expanded Travel Radius Mod

MaxisCactus has official released their first spore mod. Due to an uproar over the problem of unreachable grox planets, EA last week promised to fix the problem. They have now released their first mod and have fixed the problem. This is a boon for us modders as this shows us how EA release their mods, and also this mod does exactly what we modders released over 2 months ago.

I hope you enjoy killing of those grox now.

Spore DRM to be discussed by the Federal Trade Commission

It seems that the contraversy of the last few months has reached the ears of the Federal Trade Commission. And now we finally get out own say. Thanks to Ars Tech for this.


2008 may become known as the year of digital rights management, thanks in no small part to EA’s bringing the issue front and center with Spore and the ensuing backlash. These days gamers want to know what kind of DRM a game employs before they make a purchase, and for many people the inclusion of SecuROM means a lost sale. All of the sound and fury surrounding the issue has gotten the attention of the Federal Trade Commission, and the government agency is planning on holding a town hall meeting devoted to the subject of DRM on March 25. 

The official page describes the meeting and its aim. “Digital rights management (DRM) refers to technologies typically used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, and copyright holders to attempt to control how consumers access and use media and entertainment content,” the FTC explains. “Among other issues, the workshop will address the need to improve disclosures to consumers about DRM limitations.”

The agenda includes demonstrations of DRM-related technology, panel discussions about how these technologies affect consumers, legal issues surrounding DRM, and discussions on the potential need for government involvement to protect consumers. 

You can get involved, as well. “The Commission invites interested parties to submit requests to be panelists and to recommend other topics for discussion. The requests should be submitted electronically to drmtownhall@ftc.gov by January 30, 2009….The Commission will select panelists based on their expertise and on the need to represent a range of views.” If you would simply like to have your voice heard you can submit comments or original research as well. This is an excellent opportunity to make your voice heard on this matter, and to explain your feelings on the state of DRM in the gaming industry.

The town hall meeting will take place at the University of Washington School of Law, and will be free and open to the public, no registration required.

EA shot itself in the foot with spore

Gamesradar has created a list of games that have shot themselves in the foot, ruining themselves with stupidity. Spore is one of these with the main focus of this article on the secoRom issue.


Strange how one wrong decision can so spectacularly foul things up, isn’t it? For a couple of years, Spore was the darling of the gaming community. A brand new Sim Everything with epic scope and UGC tools of hitherto unheard of power and versatility. But then EA decided that instead of letting us buy it, it was going to essentially give us a long term loan of the game by way of a SecuROM DRM install limit. For the full retail price.

It seemed EA didn’t want people really owning Spore, and fortuitously for them, the people decided the very same thing. They downloaded the crap out of it instead. After a massive internet backlash EA generously extended the limitations, figuring that after paying to be in actual, legal possession of the game, players might, just maybe, like more than three installs ever for their money. But by that time the most promising game of the past couple of years had been turned into a bitter-tasting debacle. And the piracy which EA was so keen to avoid? Spore is now officially the most illegally downloaded game of 2008, clocking in 1.7 million rip-offs. Some games are happy to even sell that many. Oh, and there are two class-action lawsuits on the way to the publisher now too. Good work EA. Glad it all worked out for you in the end.

Interview with head of Spore Origins

EA Mobile Newsletter sat down with Scott Humphries, head developer of Spore Origins.


Q: Tell us all about the mobile version of SPORE:
A: The mobile version of SPORE focuses on the cell phase of evolution. We’re supporting hundreds of handsets at launch, from low-end devices, to high-end smart phones. Our goal was to create a really fun experience across ALL of these devices worldwide.

Q: What’s a cool mobile-specific feature?
A: We’ve included a version of the creature creator in our game that also allows you to customize your creature in millions of different ways.

Q: What’s the goal of the game?
A: The goal of the game is really simple: eat as much food as you can, while avoiding predators. 

Q: What’s the best part overall?
A: Once you finish the single player game, you’ll be able to share the creatures you’ve created online to battle friends. You’ll be able to challenge buddies on your handset or on the web, no matter where you are!

Q: Will there be the opportunity to present the creatures you created to other gamers?
A: Totally. That’s where Arena mode comes in. Since one of the other main focuses of the PC game was user-generated content and our platform is ALWAYS connected, we wanted to make sure to tap into this strategy in some way. We thought it would be cool to take the creatures you made in Evolution mode and trade them with friends to watch them battle. So we created a networked version of the game where you can battle friends directly from your handset and a community site (spore.eamobile.com) where you could battle friends by transferring your creature manually using DNA codes. Each creature fights uniquely with their AI emerging from the parts you added to them in Evolution. There’s a Flash interface on the website where you can watch your creatures fight it out and each player can store up to 16 different creatures. There’s also a global leader board where you can track your creature’s rankings and battles.

Q: SPORE Origins is also available on the iPhone/iPod touch. What additional features are available on those devices?
A: The iPhone/iPod Touch version of SPORE Origins features a bunch of additional bells and whistles. Those devices are really powerful so the overall presentation from graphics to audio is enhanced. You can also control your creature by tilting the device and edit it by touching the screen. There is also some additional content on the iPhone/iPod Touch version like more levels, creatures, parts, and obstacles for your creature to overcome. If you want to check it out, download the SPORE Origins LE demo from the iTunes App Store for free. I also wanted to mention the game is available for other ?click-wheel? iPods like the 3rd generation Nano and iPod video. The iPod version features enhanced graphics and audio over the mobile version and is great for playing with some great music like when you’re on a long plane ride or waiting at the bus stop. It plays especially well with some ambient electronic music in the background.

New Class Action attempts to shut down DRM forever

Just when we thought the whole DRM in spore issue has gone away, California resident Alex McQuown added one more Spore suit to the pile. However unlike previous class actions, attorneys are attempting to use Spore as a symbol for Electronic Arts’ entire SecuROM initiative, and hope to shut it all down at the same time.

Filed in California’s Northern District Court by attorneys from the offices of Finkelstein Thompson, the body of the lawsuit looks much the same as the three submitted by Thomas, Eldridge and Cortez earlier this year. In much the same way, it calls out SecuROM for secretly installing itself on the computers of unwitting Spore Creature Creator users; in much the same way, it talks about SecuROM as a pest that interferes with other software and hardware, and one that can never be completely removed.

The lawsuit even invokes the same statutes — McQuown claims that EA represented the game unfairly under the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, engaged in deceptive and unfair business practices under the Unfair Competition Law, and generally trespassed upon their personal property by failing to disclose that the game included this secret program.

But McQuown’s suit has three key differences from those that have come before. First, his lawyers claim that SecuROM isn’t merely a nuisance, but that it actually causes physical harm to the computers of those who use it. The document cites “a damaged CD-ROM drive” and “a damaged graphics card” among McQuown’s issues, and states that the class members “will have to spend countless hours and money to repair the damage to their computer.” (bolding ours)

Second, the document suggests that SecuROM is useless even for its intended purpose, and thus that “EA has needlessly caused [sic] its consumers time, money and frustration by having to repair various computer problems.”

20. Although EA put SecuROM in its games to prevent piracy, SecuROM has been ineffective in preventing the illegal downloading of EA games.  To the contrary, piracy of some SecuROM games has risen sharply. For instance,  just three weeks after EA released Spore in September 2008, the game had been illegally downloaded over 500,000 times on a popular peer-to-peer file sharing protocol. Indeed, SecuROM has done little to prevent piracy, and, instead, has led to many frustrated game owners who now face a host of computer problems.

But third, buried near the end of the document, is the kicker — the lawsuit isn’t just about Spore:

The class is initially defined as follows: All persons or entities in the United States that have purchased an Electronic Arts computer game with SecuROM.

Edge Online reported Monday that former plaintiff Thomas had dropped her class-action, in favor of being consolidated into a larger class-action suit that law firm KamberEdelson is currently trying to create. GameCyte has contacted Finkelstein Thompson, the firm on McQuown’s case, in an attempt to discover if there might be similar plans for this suit.

Update: Rosemary M. Rivas, an attorney on the case, told GameCyte that while class-action lawsuits of this sort are judged related or consolidated as a matter of course, she could not comment on the firm’s intent to work with proactively work with other current class-action suits at this point in time.

Spore #1 Pirated game of 2008

Spore as predicted has been crowned the most pirated game of 2008. With 500,000 downloads in september alone, and over 1 million througout the rest of the year, there has been unprecedented downloads, resulting in 1.7 million downloads since september, a record breaking figure. This was mainly due to Spore’s DRM which created a massive custormer backlash which resulted in EA making the DRM much looser then before, and three class action cases.

The Sims 2 came in second place with 1.2 million downloads, with assasons creed rounding out the top 3, with just over 1 million downloads.

Another Class Action against Spore for DRM

Richard Eldridge has accused Spore’s Creators, Electronic Arts, with installing software unbeknown to the customer. This case is against the Spore Creature Creator Trail which installed SecuROM  which can not be uninstalled fully from your computer. From the suit:

EA’s EULA for Spore Creature Creator Free Trial Edition makes utterly no mention of any Technical Protection Measures, DRM technology, or SecuROM whatsoever…

There is also a similar case against EA for The Sims 2: Bon Voyage.

EA Threatens Game Bans for Forum Activity

Owners of Electronic Arts published titles such as Spore and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 may end up banned from playing their games if they get banned from any EA-moderated forum, according to this post from moderator eaapoc:

Your forum account will be directly tied to your Master EA Account, so if we ban you on the forums, you would be banned from the game as well since the login process is the same. And you’d actually be banned from your other EA games as well since its all tied to your account. So if you have SPORE and Red Alert 3 and you get yourself banned on our forums or in-game, well, your SPORE account would be banned to. It’s all one in the same, so I strongly recommend people play nice and act mature.

Similar threats emerged earlier this year, when Spore forumites were threatened with bans for discussing the title’s controversial DRM, though EA later stepped in to clarify that the threat stemmed from an “over-zealous community volunteer” and were “absolutely not true or in-line with EA’s moderation policy.”

“What if some moderator goes off on a power trip?” asked Shacker Pugnate, who tipped Shacknews off to the news. “Does he seriously have the right to block access to software you legally purchased?”
